Cogeneration power plants are engines of all kinds producing electric energy as well as heat at the same time! The long english name is "combined heat and power CHP" and in german they are called "Blockheizkraftwerk BHKW".  They use the knowledge we acquired about engines in the last 100 years and produce energy by turning and running a dynamo. Additionally the heat energy can be used for several reasons.
